Before Dessert…

DESSERT EVERY DAY?

Although I am trying to make desserts that are made with “healthier” ingredients, I just have to say that it is not an easy task to translate some of our great dessert treasures into healthy versions. There are certain recipes that lend themselves well  to healthy versions like banana bread or cake (with or without gluten), for which my daughter Maya has come up with some delicious recipes which she will share with you in this blog. I am about to try a brown rice pudding made with coconut cream (or maybe creamy oat milk), eggs, and perhaps a little honey which sounds like it could work; however a totally healthy chocolate cake I think would be hard to come by so not sure it’s worth the effort.

My personal diet consists mostly of beans, whole grain breads, LOTS of green vegetables, nuts, brown rice, an occasional egg and a hamburger and fries once every few weeks (which I will NEVER give up!!) Every night I have a bite or two of something sweet to finish off the day. Once a week I indulge in a less than nutritional breakfast (like a croissant or a donut from Union Square Donuts which are, hands down, the best donuts in Boston). This is my practice of yin and yang, a basic diet of healthy, nutritious food injected here and there with treats that exalt my sense of pleasure, an essential component of life and mental health.

Perhaps at some point I will include healthy dinner recipes, as well, but honestly, I do not feel that exact measurements are that important when cooking nutritious vegetarian meals; there are SO many combination of veggies and seasonings that will work well depending on what you like, s maybe I will post some pics with ideas of things to  combine for  quick and hearty meals and soups.
